The Physical Education Department aims principally to promote the healthy physical, social and psychological development of all pupils. Accordingly, it offers to every pupil a wide and varied range of sporting activities through its curricular and extracurricular programmes.
Specific Aims Of The Department
The Physical Education Department aims to:
- develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of human performance through participation in a range of physical activities;
- provide pupils with opportunities to acquire and develop to the highest level a range of physical skills related to selected games/sports;
- develop in pupils self-discipline, confidence, competence and a positive attitude;
- develop pupils’ appreciation of the relationship between physical activity and general health; and
- promote pupils’ appreciation of the significance of co-operation and competition in individual and team games.
Overview Of Key Stage 3 Curriculum
At Key Stage 3, Physical Education is delivered through 3 periods of PE per week.
Pupils study a broad and balanced range of activities in the following areas of study:
- Athletics
- Dance
- Games
- Gymnastics

The 60-credit BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma extends the specialist work-related focus of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma offers greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units.
It is broadly equivalent to one GCE A Level.
Entry Requirement
It is not necessary for candidates to have studied GCSE Physical Education although it is desirable for candidates to have achieved grades A – C in GCSE English and Science.
BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport
- Enables you to develop your understanding of the essential skills and knowledge needed when looking to build a career in sport.
- The course provides you with the training in areas which are key to the study of sports performance, and provides a foundation for starting professional work, or progressing to further study.
- The course can be adapted to meet your talents and aspirations: it consists of compulsory core units plus your choice of four specialist units (totalling 720 guided learning hours).
- The structure of the course lets you focus on the areas which will benefit you the most such as analysis of sports performance, sport exercise of sports coaching. Please note the units studied may vary to meet local or learner needs.
Course Content
The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport is a 60-credit and 360-guided-learning-hour (GLH) qualification.
It consists of three mandatory units plus one mandatory specialist unit, plus optional units that provide for a combined total of 60 credits (where at least 45 credits must be at level 3 or above).

Unit Grading
All BTEC Courses are assessed by means of Units which comprise of several Assignments. Each assignment is designed to link to specific Learning Outcomes and Grade Criteria. These can be found on each assignment brief. At the end of the course your unit grades put together determines your overall grade through a points system.
On completion of each unit you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction. These overall unit grades are based on the completion of the assignments within the unit.
*Pass – In order to achieve an overall pass you must have achieved all pass criteria as set out in the unit grading grid.
*Merit – To achieve an overall merit you must have achieved all pass and merit criteria as set out in the unit grading grid.
*Distinction – In order to achieve distinction, you must have achieved all pass, merit and distinction criteria as set out in the unit grading grid.
Once your overall unit grading is awarded it will be converted to one of the following points equivalents.
These points will be multiplied by the unit credit rating to calculate your final points total per unit e.g: If unit credit value is 5 then you multiply the points by 5 or If unit credit value is 10 then you multiply the points by 10.
Final Grading
On completion of all units your points total will be calculated and converted to overall grades using the following boundaries;
